Thanks to Disney Channel Hungary, we were able to interview Dove Cameron about the third Descendants movie, as well as her future plans and more. In all three Descendants movies, she plays Mal, the daughter of Hades and Maleficent.
Disney Channel premiered the first Descendants movie in 2015. Would’ve you thought the movie will become successful and become a trilogy?
No, I don’t think that we knew that it would become a trilogy, or how well it would do. I think that was a nice surprise, but I think every time we finished one of the movies, we kinda held our breath and waited if there will be another one. We all are really grateful for the fans’ support and it’s definitely the fans have made Descendants what it is, and it’s such a wonderful part of our lives and we’re very grateful.
You’ve played Mal for the third time. Is there anything about yourself that you’ve added to this character? And by how much did she form you?
If they cast somebody based on what they do to the character, so you can have somebody come in at audition, and about 100 different people, and the character would be entirely different depending on who was playing it. So, kind of what you’re hired to do as an actor is to come in, and like, change it and bring something different than just what’s on the script, than just what direction is. So, I would say a lot was actually based on my personality, and a lot of, like her little habits and things like that come from who I am in real life. And the same thing goes for a lot of the cast, for example, a lot of Evie came from Sophia. So yeah, that’s kind of what we do.
While making the third movie, was there a scene or anything in particular that was a challenge for you?
I think that Descendants 3 was actually funny enough, and the easiest out of all of them. It wasn’t easy as in it wasn’t challenging, but just like, we were so well trained at that point, you know in dancing, sword-fighting, sort of the general pattern and you know requirements of these movies, that we were really ready to do. We were just really ready and we had all of our skills sharpened and it was definitely that I felt we were in flow.
We know that the third movie concludes the trilogy, but if there’s a fourth movie or a special announced, would you reprise your role as Mal?
Yeah. I mean, I would do another Descendants. I think It would, in all honestly, would be very difficult to do it without Cameron, I don’t think that it would make much sense to us, the cast, but If there was some magical way that it made sense, and there was another story to tell, then yeah, I would love to do another Descendants movie. It’s always gonna feel very near and dear to my heart, and like a big part of my life.
We know that in Descendants 3 some new actors join the cast. How did you work with them, was it easy to collaborate?
Yeah, I think that the newest and most notable addition to the franchise is Cheyenne Jackson, who played Hades, and I had such an incredible time with Cheyenne. He and I are very similar people, and you know, he’s done a lot of stage work, I’ve done a lot of stage work, and we both just very, like, we have the same sense of humor, we get along very famously and so when we were working together it was always like a really fun day. I’d consider him to be one of my closest friends in the franchise.
It’s said that you’ve grown up within Disney’s studios. Alongside Descendants you were a double protagonist in the Disney Channel show – Liv and Maddie, plus you’ve worked as a voice actor in a few Marvel cartoons. What are your plans for now and the future?
I am about to be releasing my own music, and that’s something I’ve been really focusing on right now, my upcoming singles and music videos, and it’s a totally new world for me to dive into. My first two singles are coming in September, and after that I go back to Los Angeles to play Clara Johnson in the The Light in the Piazza with my touring cast, and after that I go into production for my next movie.
